If you are not familiar with the RED, it’s a video camera that shoots RAW images at 4K (4096×2304 pixels) allowing a multitude of adjustments in post.  A lot of credit should be given to the production team for their achievement in this, because most of the video and lighting equipment had to be flown in from various places such as the US and Japan.

The project was edited using Proxy files, which are lower resolution files and then reconnected to the RAW files after final edit approval.  There are many different RED workflows to choose from and being modified daily, as it’s still cutting edge. RED has created a line of its own applications to process the RAW image data into the other various video codecs. Third party applications are also available which are  Clipfinder, Monkey Extract and Crimson. Final Cut Pro/Color and Adobe Premiere can also import the RED files, but do not take advantage of the “Color Science” algorithm at this point, so these workflows weren’t an option. Some other higher end film finishing programs are available as well.  RED has also developed the RED ROCKET card to use with it’s programs, which is an excelerator card that allows you to convert the RED media in real time.  The 2.5hr camera reels that would take just over 3 days to render previously using the applications and standard 8-core MacPro, take just 2.5hrs using REDCINE-X with the Red Rocket, so this is the workflow we chose.    The DVD is available now HERE, with a Blu-ray and High Definition Broadcast possible this year.

In August we were asked by IANTD BOA Georges Gawinowski to help put together the DVD portion of the new IANTD Essentials course. I would be teaming up with Georges’ brother Thierry, who happens to be a very talented video producer from Merci, France. After we organized all the equipment and went through the check list, we were off from Ft. Lauderdale to Cave Country in Northern Florida. Cave Country is a term divers use to describe the large area of caves and springs west of I-75 from about Ocala to Lake City, our destination was Ginnie Springs. We arrived to greet Daehag Kim and Eunjin Jo who helped as talent. Over the course of a week, we shot a lot of underwater demos and land drills as well as an interview with legendary cave diver John Orlowski. In October we shot more skills with Oliver Paoli and Georges in the pool and ocean. Thierry has been tasked with the offline edit and designs and me, the online. In June we were asked by Hutton Miller LLC to produce/shoot an underwater demo for the Mighty Tape product with host Billy Mays a week before he passed. Billy was no stranger to the Hutton Miller team and myself, having worked with him many times before and considered a friend. Billy was a great man and will be missed. Hutton Miller has produced all the Mighty products, which I was called in to edit on a few. I’ve also edited the Big City Slider Station product for the Schwartz Group in 2008.

It was a perfect morning, the ocean was glass flat and the sun shining. My crew of divers were Georges Gawinowski, Scott Blair, Doug Barkley and we used Parrot Island Charters boat the Fish Food. Here are some of the production photos.

Orgreenic Cookware: 30 minute infomercial for a Green Cookware that uses Ceramic instead of Teflon for non-stick.

Clip-it-Clean: a nail trimmer, with a light, magnifier and a nail catcher (not the best footage to watch). The product seems to be offline, so I guess it didn’t go so well, but it resembles the Sure Clip.

MSA9000: a hearing amplifier that looks like a bluetooth headset, which appears to be failed product, but you can buy it at various shops like this one.

WOW Containers: This is probably my favorite product, every lid is a container and every container is a lid…pretty cool.

Perfect Brownie: This thing is everywhere and now competing with the Mighty Putty spot as one of the spots I worked on, that I see most on TV. (although Mighty Putty doesn’t play much anymore. RIP Billy)

Moving Max Ladder: Ladder on wheels. Pretty slick and works pretty well, if you don’t stress it too much.

Big Top Cupcake: This one did better than expected. The Silicone really is non-stick and the food styling was pretty amazing. I didn’t realize until, my niece and nephew got one for Christmas and were very excited, not even knowing I worked on the spot, which made them even more excited.

We will keep everyone informed on the happenings with Rec and Tek. The next year is looking up to be a very exciting time with the breakthrough technologies in the Digital RAW Image category.  With our strategic partner Champe Barton of Horizon Productions and the RED ONE Camera, we look forward to providing a solid post production solution in South Florida for the RED workflow and utilizing the RED ROCKET to create real time transfers of RED ONE footage and a DIT (Digital Imaging Technician) service.  With that being said, we look to have an Underwater RED ONE camera by the end of the year.
